#Refurbed goods and Brand Protection, my real grading criteria. ( Part one )

first refurbisher commandment “Protect the brand”

Usually, when we are looking for a refurbished good, through the e-tailers or shops online or something like that, find out first our article, then we check the price, then , going to specifics, details about status of goods, quality, aesthetic details and so on.

Often, we find some additional details like for example, “certified refurbished” or some grading criteria like for example, A/A plus, B, Star, Gold grade etc. Every company have his grading criteria about refurbed goods, every refurbisher same.

This is correct, it’s a good policy in order to protect the customer and get more useful and mandatory details for purchasing.

But how many vendors protect brands ? They are interested to do that or at the end add grist to their mill? When the vendor defines a product as “certified refurbished” applying a grading criteria, it’s included the “brand protection”?

Let me say, often the answer is , no ! Because it’s a cost.

When i’ve selected my partners, for my consulting company, my choice is gone to traders and refurbishers, following my visionary idea of circular economy, green and last but not least, the brand protection criteria use.
I am a service company, and my clients ( the brands ) must to be protected.

For example. How many e-tailers or sellers asks to their supplier (to get them “certified refurbished” plate ) if goods are refurbished with original spare parts? Believe me , not so much.
Why , never, there is not mention to “certified refurbished only with original spare parts” ? Simple, because the risk is to lose competitivity.

I get one year of warranty, says the seller, my supplier are selected carefully.
Not works so.

Seller protect his business, but his business is created thanks to the brands, and if you, first protect the brand, you protect business twice.

To use original spare parts, as my refubisher partners do it, safe the native quality, this means “brand protection” and only after that, the final result can be really accredited as “certified refurbished” .

#Refurbished goods online market players expects to have an optimistic “Green Friday”

Refurbished goods online market expects to gain continued demand for pre-owned products ahead of the festive season this year. We believe the demand for refurbished products to continue to grow in the times to come,and having seen the trends, we are optimistic about the continued demand for pre-owned products ahead of the festive season this year.

This is to happen when all major e-tailers , like Amazon Renewed, and others are geared up with their sale events for the festive season and are offering products at aggressive discount prices and offers. The question stands why a consumer would buy refurbished products given new products are available at such huge discounts and offers?

As consumers adapt to the ‘new normal’, they can buy good quality products at affordable prices as refurbished and pre-owned products can be about 30-40 per cent cheaper as compared to new products. They also have exciting options like no-cost EMI, warranty, discounts, doorstep delivery, product installation, demo options and buy-back options which make pre-owned products more attractive.

Before the coronavirus pandemic hit almost every sector of the economy, the refurbished market in Europe was seeing rapid growth. In fact, in 2019 last year, when the global refurbished products market declined by one per cent, the European market for refurbished goods increased by 9 per cent, as per research stats.

However, as the lockdown was eased post-April, organized refurbished market started to get its momentum back. where TVs, refrigerators and kitchen appliances were in most demand. Similarly, Amazon’s Refurbished Goods Vertical Amazon Renewed had witnessed a higher customer demand (reportedly, 10 – 20 per cent) post the easing of lockdown.
For that reason, expectations about refurbished products sales, are prudencially optimistic, hoping for a “green Friday”

The challenges of job loses and salary cuts, in the backdrop of a contracted economy to have a massive impact on consumer buying behaviour cannot be ignored. Despite that, the companies are hopeful of success. , while the economic impact of the current pandemic is likely to affect consumer behaviour, we foresee consumers to largely lean towards options which deliver better value. The concept of reusing is not new to european consumers. If this unforeseen pandemic has taught us anything, it is to put second-hand first and considering the environmental benefits associated with reusing products.

At 10 billion of dollars , the refurbished market for consumer electronics is one of the largest in the tech space making it impossible to ignore. Moreover, with no signs of it slowing down any time soon, the refurbished tech may just be the future of consumer tech.

Many consumers have come to realize that refurbished could mean a lot of other things apart from used. Refurbished products are typically manufacturer or store restored products that come at an affordable price since they have been used as demos, damaged during shipping, returned for minor defects, or sometimes just buyer’s remorse.

New innovations – Even though there are many factors that can be blamed for the slowdown in the tech market, rising costs of new products due to new technologies have also played a massive role in the shift towards refurbished. Big Players introducing shiny and innovative features such as tech innovations more and more frequently, the costs have been rising in line with prices and this has pushed many consumers out of the new products market, to refurbished.

Competition – With new manufacturers of Home appliances which offering budget products, major companies have had to shift to selling refurbished to prevent the loss of market share and revenue. Some of the major companies , have recycling and take-back programs that accept old consumer tech, which can be repaired and then sold as refurbished.

Environment and CO2 – As consumer demand continues to rise, refurbished technology is undoubtedly the future of consumer tech. Selling slightly used or older products can be instrumental in helping manufacturers bolster their bottom line, minimize the threat of e-waste, and improve the reputation of their brands. There will always be people who will take a pre-owned products, open box, or slightly scratched as long as it works, is of the right model, and brand. Working together, manufacturers and consumers can work towards win-win outcomes with refurbished tech, and by doing so, will have a positive CO2 impact on the environment.

#Reverselogistic . Then? We Can …

What are the limits of most part of reverse logistics companies?

I was speaking in past with a friend of mine about a project with super enthusiasm, and he told me as per answer “Mik, they already invented coke, and Nutella as well” . Are past more than 25 years from that, but anytime im reading about a project , think about my friend’s answer.

I’ve started unusually, this post today, with a personal thought , because i want introduce,shortly, my new project called “Pick-up & Refurb” , but at the same time i want speak about the limit of some Reverse Logistics companies focus on electronics or non food.

a short premise, this is my personal point of view. I’ve max respect of all reverse logistics companies, and i think their job as mandatory, basical for all companies have in mind to evolve in circular economy.

The question is: ” reverse logistic, but then? ”

Most part of my follower are in supply chain, and have perfect idea about reverse logistic flows.

I simplify in large terms. Returns are collected, via end user or in shops or others instrument, parcelized, managed, checked, sent in storage or to the manufacturer directly.

Great . All carrier companies makes this, DHL, Fedex and so on. The war between reverse logistics companies it’s all in services quality and prices, because more or less services are all the same, or better “have to be” all the same because the flows are the same. but then?

Then the products follows different road-maps, some of them are scrapped, going to weee, sold per kilo, often sold to traders without any “brand protection” policy; so basically products surfing in a deep ocean of sharks, where costs saved risks to be lost, and this is, from my point of view, the bottleneck .

What is new in “Pick-up & Refurb” ?

Simply , the project it’s realistically a “Closed-loop” Supply Chain circular economy instrument .

We collect and manage returns, in all possible cases, directly end-user-home, shops, returns logistic and so on. THEN, in our logistic we check them, categorize, identify all single item with UID code, palletize it and after we’ve sent all technical data to the client are sent to our refurbishment centers , where the products are repaired and refurbished according client specifications.

THEN, when the process is completed, only 100% working products, certified refurbished, tested and graded , are sent back to the client or sold in our markets Extra EU or EU, according agreement with the client.

Not working products, are cannibalized for spare parts, or sent to weee, according european laws, with valid EU certification.

All process data about repairing, defects, serial defectiveness, quality, grading and so on are shared and sent to the client which is completely in knowledge about on every single step, operator, process of his products in real time thanks to the UID code.

A new lifecycle, less electronic waste, realistic saving cost actions, less CO2 impact ( we cut a logistic step at the beginning )

This is ( my point of view ) the real Supply chain “Closed Loop” , this is for me what means circular economy , in few words THEN? We can.

All my clients knows that, I’ve always introduced Refurbishment services, as not only a reverse logistic solution, but also as solution for financial dept.

The first step towards defining your reverse logistics strategy is to understand the current returns flows, including: identifying the total cost
of returns (by product, by market, by channel – including the impact on any indirect taxes such as customs and duties, VATs etc as well as any regulatory constraints that may limit returns to/from certain countries), profiling the end-to-end returns and quantifying and categorizing your return flows. This information becomes instrumental to facilitate an accurate definition of your strategic approach to manage returns and will indicate where supply chain risks need to be mitigated.

“the only recipe is that, there isn’t a recipe” starts Michele, “i mean, nobody was ready to this emergency, nothing could be compared to other crisis, so , nobody can say -i have the solution- , and for that reason the only one help, could comes only from the experience, that’s it.

Following my experience, for home appliances companies, is not a solution but could be seriously helpful have to follows the “seven R’s ” which are for me, the mandatory circular economy rules .

Can the pandemic help us to embrace refurbished home appliances?

As the pandemic has impacted supply chains, some Home appliances and electronics manufacturers have struggled to produce new equipment. Could this be the moment for refurbishing and reusing existing equipment?

Sales of appliances and electronics goods have surged in recent months as millions around the world have turned their homes into offices and digital classrooms. Within the first two weeks of March, the US saw IT and other electronics equipments all increase by 10%.

That might sound like good news for manufacturers, but the other winners could be those pushing for circular economies that facilitate a continual use of resources. this could be a key moment for sustainable production. The fact that many manufacturers haven’t been able to produce and supply new equipment, has made them start “to look in other directions to keep their infrastructure running,” and that they are now “opening up for a circular business model.”

But in a world that generates about 50 million tons of electric and electronic waste annually — roughly equivalent to discarding 1,000 laptops every single second, opting for refurbished goods is still relatively uncommon. 

Even though the European Union adopted a new Circular Economy Action Plan in March that aims to ensure resources used are kept in the EU economy for as long as possible, manufacturers are still uncertain about strategies and get their returns to be refurbished.

Personally im in refurbishment from over ten years, and i can say quietly that , open to a refurbishment strategy it’s an opportunity .

Financially to recover and safe costs, in Marketing get the brand an image sustainable, In sales meaning to maintain the brand always active, and safe a stable market share.
